Many of us don't realize that Facebook, Inc. is one of the Internet's leading sources of news. That's because we're consumed by the social part of social networking.

Facebook has launched "FB Newswire," which it describes as a resource that will make it easier for journalists and newsrooms to find, share and embed newsworthy content from Facebook in the media they produce.

FB Newswire derives its news stories from Storyful, a leading social content discovery and verification for newsrooms. It aggregates newsworthy content shared publicly on Facebook by individuals and organizations across the world for journalists to use in their reporting.

This content will include original photos, videos and status updates posted by people on the front lines of major events like protests, elections and sporting events.

FB Newswire is accessible on Facebook at Facebook.com/FBNewswire and on Twitter at @FBNewswire. It will be updated in real-time with content related to top news stories.

Storyful, which is owned by News Corp, describes itself as the first news agency of the social media age. Storyful's Newswire allows newsrooms to quickly source breaking news on the social web. Every month, Newswire deliver over 1,000 verified videos to its partners through the Storyful platform or its API.

Storyful's global team of journalists is always on hand to provide editorial support and to source, verify and contextualize videos.

FB said that in Storyful, it has found a partner with a track record of understanding both the potential of the social web as a key resource for media as well as the tools that newsrooms need to utilize it.

"We're confident that their news expertise and best-in-class editorial team will help make it even easier for journalists to use compelling social content from Facebook in their newsgathering and reporting."

"News is finding a bigger audience on Facebook than ever before," said Andy Mitchell, Facebook director of global media partnership. "Journalists and media organizations have become an integral part of Facebook."

Facebook has been upgrading features for real-time sharing and communicating in a challenge to Twitter, which has become a popular platform for instantly sharing information about current events.
