'Destiny 2' release date update: launch pushed back to 2017
"Destiny 2" is moved to a 2017 release as the team behind the development of the game focuses on "delivering a large expansion later this year," the game developer Bungie said in a statement published earlier last month.
There is no other detail yet on what this large expansion entails. Bungie further explained, however, that there will be a spring update coming to "Destiny."
"Prior to the holiday break we mentioned a second, larger update slated for Spring. That content release will feature a significant Light increase, a bunch of new gear to earn and equip, and new challenges for PvE players seeking some more fun experiences and replayability," the statement reads.
There are also no morsels of information about the sequel, but there are already speculations trickling in about what it will focus on. One of the hottest rumors is that of Osiris taking the spotlight. The name has been mentioned in "Destiny," but no players have actually seen the character yet. In the original game, there is so-called "Trials of Osiris." This is a weekly tournament where teams of three players fight against each other. The winning team gets to visit the Temple of Osiris, which is found on Mercury.
Kotaku's source describes Osiris as an "Obi-Wan Kenobi-like mentor living in an ancient Vex temple on Mercury."
A leaked information on Reddit says, "['Destiny 2'] will focus heavily on Osiris and his endeavors as he is the main quest giver in the game."
There could also be a new enemy coming to the sequel, but the Reddit user admitted that there is no assurance to this. Moreover, the title of the upcoming video game is planned to be "Destiny 2: The Shattered Suns."
All these rumors, though, have to be taken with a grain of salt until Bungie and Activision give their official statement or until the date of the 2017 release comes close.
