'Criminal Minds' season 12 spoilers: showrunner Erica Messer teases exciting new storylines
"Criminal Minds'" Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) is more than just a team, they're a family. Now, a new face is poised to join the close-knit group in season 12.
"CSI: Miami" alum Adam Rodriguez is set to join the "Criminal Minds" family as a series regular in season 12. The 41-year-old actor has been tapped to portray an FBI Fugitive Task Force agent who will be working with the BAU. The character will reportedly make his debut in season 12's premiere episode, although it's still a mystery whether he will be working as a profiler or has just been assigned to assist the team.
CBS Entertainment President Glenn Geller revealed in a statement that they're all big fans of the "Magic Mike" star and are "excited to welcome him back to the CBS family as part of the terrific cast of 'Criminal Minds.'" It was a sentiment shared by showrunner Erica Messer, who also promised fans exciting storylines ahead for the BAU.
The BAU admittedly needs help going into season 12 as they're down to two members. While no one can replace Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore), the addition of someone from the Bureau's Fugitive Task Force is welcome, especially as Aaron Hotchner (Thomas Gibson) and his team have to deal with the aftermath of 13 serial killers escaping from prison.
One of the prisoners who escaped in the finale of "Criminal Minds" season 11 is Mr. Scratch, aka Peter Lewis (Bodhi Elfman), the man who manipulated Hotch psychologically back in season 10. Capturing him and the other 12 murderers seems to be top priority for the team next season. It also gives the show a lot of potential storylines to work on, something that made Messer and writer Breen Frazier all pumped up.
"We're excited to catch these bad guys all over again. Some we will have known, like Mr. Scratch, and others will be bad guys that maybe some of the team hasn't caught before," Messer explained to TV Guide. "That allows us to have some creative license."
Aside from some returning UnSubs, Messer is also hoping that they can get Dr. Tara Lewis (Aisha Tyler) and Diana Reid (Jane Lynch) to return next season, as fans also love to see more of the team's private lives.
"Criminal Minds" season 12 is set to return to CBS in the fall.
