Casey Kasem, legendary voice, dies at 82
Casey Kasem, a radio personality who has made a name for himself with his show "Casey's Top 40," passed away Sunday morning.
America's most familiar voice on the radio has bid farewell. Casey Kasem died Sunday morning in Washington surrounded by friends and family. He was 82 years old. The family has released a statement regarding his death, as relayed by his children.
"Early this Father's Day morning, our dad Casey Kasem passed away surrounded by family and friends," wrote the Casem children, Kerri, Mike, and Julie, in a statement released by the family's representative, Danny Deraney.
"Even though we know he is in a better place and no longer suffering, we are heartbroken ... The world will miss Casey Kasem, an incredible talent and humanitarian; we will miss our Dad," the statement continued. Both Kerri and Mike gained fame in the early to late 90's by being MTV video jockeys, both gaining rewards for the splendid vocal talent they received from their father.
Kasem has been battling with Lewy body disease, a particularly aggressive type of Alzheimer's for quite some time. Kasem died in Washington's St. Anthony's Hospital in Gig Harbor early on Father's Day.
Casey Kasem's other hit radio shows include American Top 40, and even spin offs such as America's Top 10, which was inspired by his hit American Top 40. Casey began to gain popularity in the 70's and became one of the most influential radio acts in American radio history.
