The event that will lead to this stems from Commander Smith's attempt to usurp the king, only to find out later on that it is the Reiss family who rules the kingdom and not the king himself.

While it's true that the events in "Attack on Titan" in the manga are exciting, indeed, there is still no certainty that its anime counterpart will really stay faithful to the series.
