Android O updates: New notification schemes, battery saving feature

(Reuters/Mark Blinch)Android O will be unveiled at Google I/O conference.

Reports are surfacing that Google will feature major changes to its operating system with the launch of the Android O.

One of the several features that may be expected from the upcoming operating system (OS) is the introduction of icon badges for applications when notifications arrive. This is similar to the ones seen from the iOS, where numbers or texts in a balloon appear when there is an update from a particular app.

Other modifications and improvement expected from the OS brand is the usage of the sync notifications and smart ordering.

Similar to the ones employed by Android TV and iPads, users may also expect the introduction of the "picture in picture" mode, where users may now be able to view media contents while working on another app platform. This will, as an illustration, let users view videos while scrolling up and down their social media platforms.

Users of the new Android O will also be given a boost for their device's battery with the revamping of the operating system's power saving features. In addition to the "Doze" feature, there will be a priority-based usage of the battery that may entail the reloading of some of the inactive applications.

The iconic Google Assistant will also be renewed and improved. One of the reported inclusion is the Smart Text Selection, which will aid users in selecting, copying, and pasting text contents such as phone numbers, address, among others. Google Assistant will move these contents automatically.

Finally, reports are claiming that Google will improve its "gestures and moves" feature, as many devices currently employ movement-based application interaction such as the Google Pixel's "Moves."

Google O will be unveiled in the in the upcoming Google I/O conference in Shoreline Ampitheatre Mountain View, California from May 17 to 19. The event, aimed at bringing local developers in one place, will also feature activities such as demos, codelabs, and hackathons.
