Windows 10 Mobile could get fingerprint scanner support in July
There have been a number of rumors about the exciting changes that could be coming to Windows 10 Mobile when an update for the mobile operating system arrives this summer. With the latest batch of rumors come hints that among the changes would be the addition of support for fingerprint scanners.
While many flagship smartphones, including those from Apple and Samsung, have featured fingerprint scanner for years, Microsoft has steadfastly refrained from including it on its mobiles. However, going by the latest news about Windows 10 Mobile, Engadget states that support for fingerprint scanning could be arriving soon. Also, if the support for scanning is included, it could mean that Windows 10 Mobile devices, which are usually created by Microsoft, could be coming with scanners in the future.
Currently, Windows 10 Mobile devices only allow for users to log in using facial and iris recognition that is supported in the Windows Hello feature. However, during the recently concluded WinHEC conference, Microsoft outlined how an update, which is going to arrive for Windows 10 Mobile in the future, will now support fingerprint scanners. Since this particular piece of information was seen in a slide created by Microsoft, it is likely to happen.
As for the update that will bring the support for fingerprint scanners to Windows 10 Mobile, it is named the Anniversary Update. Importantly, the update is going to arrive in July of this year and it is currently said to be in testing stage. However, there are indications that despite the support for fingerprint scanners arriving, it will take some time for Microsoft to include the hardware on its devices. Last year's Lumia 950 and 950 XL importantly have no fingerprint scanners, which is seen as a drawback by many. As of now, only the HP Elite X3, which runs Windows 10 Mobile, has a fingerprint scanner and it is likely that Microsoft could be planning for other phones to follow suit.
