Microblogging site Twitter went down Wednesday morning without explanation, but later as "for maintenance"; as VB News reported as it was happening. It was unclear if the downtime affected all users or just some, but the social network could not be accessed via sites whether on desktop, mobile, or its many apps.

Being an important venue of expression, it would be awful to imagine how the service which carry it all, posting people's complaints, news, personal trends, activities and mixture of expressions, would suddenly disappear. The outage also affected services and sites which hook into Twitter.

It was almost noon at 11:47 a.m. Pacific time when Twitter came to life again. At 12:12 p.m., the social media company updated its status. Twitter explained they experienced unexpected complications during a deployment of a service at 11:01 a.m., causing the site to become unavailable.

They then rolled the deployment back upon spotting the issue in order to stabilize the service. The site's status blog has the complete record regarding the outage. #WhileTwitterWasDown is also trending.

Some users noticed the downtime around 11 a.m., with Twitter API-using services being declined access data from the real-time blurb service. Other applications like WordPress and HootSuite could not get through the gates of Twitter, and so were people who could not log in.

A developer's blog confirmed the disruption with "statuses/home_timeline", "stream" and "friend", while Twitter's status blog said that it will check the reported issues.

Call it coincidence, but Twitter's downtime happened just as its co-founder Biz Stone appeared at a conference in South by Southwest in Austin, TX.

However, all's well that ends well and Twitter is back, giving form and meaning to life again.
