In some cases, when a show ends, a public announcement is made for its next season. However, in the case of "True Detective," it's been two months since season 2 concluded and there is still no word from the creators or the network regarding its renewal for a third season. 

According to the report from Crossmap, HBO's President of Programming Michael Lombardo had already expressed his interest in another season of "True Detective." The final call is now in the hands of show creator Nic Pizzolatto, who, up until now, still hasn't released any kind of statement regarding the status of the show's season 3. 

Previously, Pizzolatto and the production of "True Detective" announced that they are planning to go ahead in making the second season while the first season was still airing, as stated on Crossmap. 

HBO's interest for a third season was actually quite surprising considering the negative feedback that the show reportedly received from two critically acclaimed directors in the industry, Quentin Tarantino and David Croneberg. 

Meanwhile, if "True Detective" season 3 were to happen, fan-made blog site True Detective Rumors speculates that the show needs a more formidable villain for the next season to possibly boost its rating.  

Furthermore, another aspect to reconsider here is the weather settings of the show. Based on the observation of True Detective Rumors, the setting of the show mostly consists of dry weather and still hasn't featured a wet or colder weather. 

There haven't been any rumors yet and the only thing that fans can turn to as of the moment is speculations. There are no casting updates, release dates or whatsoever for "True Detective" season 3 so it's best to keep an eye out for an official announcement.
