'True Detective' season 3 renewal rumors: Matthew McConaughey to reprise his Rust Cohle character

(Facebook/True Detective)If there is a season 3 of HBO's "True Detective," will Matthew McConaughey be back to reprise his Ruste Cohle character?

Could there still be hope for a "True Detective" season 3? In the event that the HBO series returns for a third season run, what are the chances for its season 2 lead star, Matthew McConaughey, to reprise his Ruste Cohle character?

According to a report, McConaughey has expressed his desire to reprise his said "True Detective" character, adding that he misses watching his character on HBO every Sunday night. While the fate of the show's third season run is still up in the air, as far as the fans of the show are concerned, at least, the actor admitted that he had reached out to the higher-ups of the show for the possibility of his character's return.

"It would have to be the right context, the right way," McConaughey told Eisen. "That thing — when I read (the original script), I knew in 20 minutes if I can play this guy, Rustin Cohle, I'm in," revealed McConaughey in an interview.

"I was a happy man when I made that for six months, because I was on my own island. Luckily my wife put up with me," added the actor as he explained further his desire to reprise his Rust Cohle character on "True Detective."

The uncertainty of "True Detective" season 3 is caused by the poor reviews its season 2 got. While its premiere season was critically acclaimed, with McConaughey even earning an Emmy nomination for his Rust Cohle character, the same thing cannot be said about its sophomore season.

Earlier this year, HBO president Michael Lombardo admitted to being the reason for the poor outcome of "True Detective" season 2, saying that he instructed Nic Pizzolatto, writer of the series, to rush the script.

Despite the uncertainty on the fate of "True Detective" season 3, hope may not be lost at all for fans of HBO's crime drama. According to FanSided, there is a possibility for the series to have already ironed out its details but just keeps them under wraps.

Fans of "True Detective" earlier rejoiced over the news of the series having a season 3 after the Instagram post of Olivia Munn, who posted a photo of her along with T.J. Miller, Jillian del Toro, and Jason Bateman and captioned it with "True Detective Season 3 #officexmasparty" went viral. However, according to another report of Fansided, the post was nothing more than a joke that was taken seriously.

If "True Detective" season 3 is really happening with Matthew McConaughey back, the still avid fans of the HBO series can only hope at this point in time.
