As time runs out, the Mystic Falls vampires realize that they will have to use drastic measures if they want to save Bonnie. Proving his need for redemption, Damon makes the ultimate sacrifice in the final episode of "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 titled "Gods & Monsters."

Despite trying to help Bonnie overcome her urges, her friends realize that she will not be able to rest until all the vampires — her friends — are dead. Damon and Stefan work together to find a way to rescue their friend. They will realize that they will have to enter the Armory and find a way to separate Bonnie from the Everlasting.

The key to the Armory and they key to saving Bonnie's life will come from an unexpected source — Alaric and Caroline's twin daughters. As Stefan breaks the news to Caroline, how will she react? Is she willing to risk the safety of her daughters to save the life of a dear friend? While the hesitation is there, it seems like the parents will allow their twins to open the Armory's door.

As Damon, Stefan, and Caroline formulate a plan, Enzo brings Bonnie to the cabin to distract her from her urges. However, the task becomes impossible after an unexpected turn of events.

With no other options, Damon demonstrates how much he has changed and sacrifices his own life to save his friends. In the promo, Damon goes deeper into the vault, and as he catches glimpses of a dark, mysterious shadow, he calls out Elena's name.

Although Nina Dobrev's departure from the series has turned Elena into a minor character, could it be that her spirit will be the one to save Bonnie's life?
