'The Last of Us Part II' release date, gameplay, news: Naughty Dog confirms sequel; Ellie becomes main playable character

(YouTube/PlayStation)In "The Last of Us Part II," players will get to play as Ellie instead of Joel.

Naughty Dog finally confirms that a sequel to "The Last of Us" is in the pipeline. However, unlike in the first game, the developer also revealed that Ellie becomes the main playable character in the sequel instead of Joel.

In a statement posted on the official Sony PlayStation blog, Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann said: "I can't tell you how satisfying it is to finally be able to say that Ellie and Joel are back for another intense, harrowing, and emotional adventure. ... We knew that it needed to be a story worth telling and, perhaps more importantly, a story worthy of Joel and Ellie. ... A story that felt special—a story that evolved into an epic journey."

Naughty Dog's PlayStation Experience (PSX) panel opened with a "The Last of Us Part II" trailer. During the event, Druckmann reiterated that the upcoming game's story will be a complementary tale to the first installment. He added that the two stories together will tell a greater one.

GameSpot reported that Druckmann is asking the fans to trust Naughty Dog and have faith that they will deliver another good narrative of the game's protagonists, Ellie and Joel's, epic journey.

On the other hand, gamers will have a whole new experience with "The Last of Us Part II" because they will have to play from Ellie's perspective.

In the teaser video, Joel found Ellie singing with a guitar, and the sequence of scenes gives the impression that she killed the several dead men that are inside the house. As Joel approaches her, he asked, "What are you doing kiddo? You're really gonna go through with this?" To which Ellie answered, "I'm gonna find and I'm gonna kill every last one of them."

It remains a mystery who these people are that Ellie intends to purge. According to another GameSpot report, when Druckmann was asked about it in the PSX event, he straightforwardly refused to answer but noted that Ellie "plays different[ly]."

The timeframe of the sequel's release remains unknown. In the statement posted at Sony's blog, Druckmann admitted that the game is in its "early days" yet and that the release is still "a ways off."
