'The Crown' season 2 spoilers, predictions: Three prime ministers, Suez Crisis, Profumo affair
Based on true story, this biographical drama series, "The Crown," is likely to present the story of another decade of the British history. Season 2 will see the reign of three prime ministers and it will touch on important historical events such as the Suez Crisis and the Profumo political scandal.
In January, show creator and writer Peter Morgan, who received an Oscar nomination for his work on "The Queen" and "Frost/Nixon" and won a Golden Globe for the screenplay of "The Queen," announced some details of season 2 at the Golden Globe press room.
"We're filming the second season at the moment and that takes us up through 1964," Morgan said. "The world changes. We leave behind a certain kind of Britain and enter a new Britain," he added.
While season 1 presented the story of Queen Elizabeth's (Claire Foy) marriage to Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (Matt Smith) in 1947 up until the breakup of Elizabeth's sister Princess Margaret (Vanessa Kirby) with Peter Townsend (Ben Miles) in 1955, the upcoming season is expected to cover the years 1956 through 1964 in Britain's history.
During this period, there were three British prime ministers, namely Anthony Eden (Jeremy Northam), Harold Macmillan and Sir Alec Douglas-Home. Season 2 will see the other two characters come to life on the screen.
The most significant events, which will likely appear in this award-winning series, include the Suez Crisis.
It will be interesting to see how they will depict the Suez Crisis which saw the attack of Egypt by Israel, United Kingdom and France. This event brought about the end of Eden's reign as the British prime minister.
Finally, the Profumo affair, which was an infamous political scandal, is also something that season 2 ought to cover. John Profumo was the secretary of state for war during the reign of Prime Minister Harold McMillan. His "scandal" started out when he was having an affair with Christine Keeler, a young British who was also rumored to be romantically involved with Yevgeny Ivanov, a Soviet naval attaché.
This entanglement would be an interesting addition to season 2 of "The Crown."
A synopsis of season 1 by Netflix reads, "In a changing world, a newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II faces daunting challenges, both in the political realm and her personal life."
"The Crown" won as best drama series at the 74th Golden Globe Awards. Foy also brought home the award for best performance of an actress in a television drama series.
"The Crown" season 2 is expected to be released in November on Netflix, but there are no official announcements to date.
