'Sword Art Online' release date: Beloved anime to have a live-action TV series

Fans of the famous Japanese novel "Sword Art Online" (SAO) definitely have a lot of things to look forward to as, apart from the third season of the anime and an upcoming animated movie, SAO will also have a live-action TV series version and a virtual reality (VR) experience. 

It has been learned that Skydance Television has already acquired the rights to "SAO" live-action series that it will produce in partnership with Kadokawa Corp. According to reports, no less than "Avatar's" scriptwriter Laeta Kalogridis who will be scribing the live-action adaptation of the series.

"For years I have been inspired by the inventive and masterful storytelling of the 'SAO' franchise," "I'm thrilled to get the opportunity to work with such talented partners to bring this cutting-edge yet timeless story to a new format at Skydance," Kalogridis said in an interview.

The live-action "SAO" will cast the spotlight on a beta-tester Kirito as it follows his adventures when he, his friends, and 10,000 other people are trapped inside a next-generation role-playing online game, which will become their world. As the game where they are trapped in involves a lot of sword fights, monsters, magic, and mystery, it goes without saying that their lives are at stake, and their goal is to get out of the game alive.

Apart from the upcoming live-action series, fans of "SAO" can also look forward to the upcoming VR experience that will be developed by Skydance's interactive arm. Without question, the "SAO" live-action series is only the beginning of bigger things to come from Skydance.

"We look forward to working alongside Laeta, Reki Kawahara and the teams at Kadokawa and Aniplex to build out a deeply immersive new universe of SAO in an authentic way that honors its well-established fan base around the globe," Skydance Media CEO David Ellison said.

In addition to the live-action series and the VR experience for "SAO," avid fans can also look forward to the release of "Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale," which is slated to come out sometime in 2017.

Meanwhile, it is said that "SAO" season 3 will be released after the "SAO" movie has arrived in theaters.

A release date for the "SAO" live action series has yet to be announced.
