'Switched at Birth' season 5 spoilers: Toby mans up for Lily and the baby
Toby (Lucas Grabeel) and Lily (Rachel Shenton) are engaged to be married in the upcoming season of "Switched at Birth."
The Kennish's eldest child has matured over time and is ready to take the next step with his girlfriend in the Freeform series. Last installment, Toby received the shock of his life when it was revealed that Lily was pregnant. On top of that, their unborn child was already diagnosed with Down syndrome. It was a tough time for everyone, but none more so than the expecting dad. To understand what the illness was, he visited a center for children with the disorder and saw how their lives were not so different than the others.
Toby has decided that he wants to marry Lily. In the promo for season 5, they can be seen telling the family the good news. A heavily pregnant Lily is showing off her engagement ring and everyone is happy. It is such a big step for Toby. Not so long ago, his priorities were different. Never in a million years has he envisioned that he will become a dad so soon. Still, John (D.W. Moffett) and Kathryn (Lea Thompson) could not be prouder of their son.
Executive producer Lizzy Weiss previously talked about the young couple's future. In an interview with Zap2it, she said that Toby and Lily would experience the usual combination of ups and downs. They will have the fears and insecurities experienced by normal couples. Since they are destined to follow a more difficult path, they will have to do their best and endure it for the sake of their baby.
According to Zap2it, the EP shares, "It's really going to be Toby and Lily coming to terms with the changes that are coming in their life."
She adds: "There was a danger of this taking over the season and having every episode be about it. We play with it for a while and our characters have other things going on. There's a big episode with Toby and Lily dealing with that and there's another episode with a baby shower coming up later."
"Switched at Birth" season 5 premieres on Jan. 24 on Freeform.
