Sony Xperia M5 vs. LG G4: Mid-range Xperia M5 gives LG flagship a run for its money

Sony announced two mid-range devices recently and while the Xperia X5 is the smaller of the duo, it comes with better hardware. Here is how it compares to the flagship LG G4.

Design

The Xperia M5 has a premium look and feel as it has Sony's OmniBalance styling and comes with an aluminum frame and glass on both its front and back. In addition, its corners are reinforced with a protective layer and it has three color options: gold, white and black. More importantly, it comes with an IP68 certification, making the device dust proof and water proof. It can also be submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes.

As for the LG G4, it is made entirely of plastic and it has a slight curve running from top to bottom. Its back panel is by default made of polycarbonate in three colors gold, gray and white ceramic but there are premium leather options available in a variety of natural colors that can be swapped out easily.

Display

The display on the LG G4 is bigger as it is a phablet-sized device and is also sharper. It comes with an IPS LCD screen measuring 5.5 inches with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels and a density of 538 pixels per inch. As for the Xperia M5, it has a 5 inch IPS LCD screen with a resolution of1080 x 1920 pixels and a density of 441 pixels per inch.

Specs

The hardware in the Xperia M5 is pretty good as it has a Mediatek MT6795 chipset, an octa-core CPU clocked at 2.0 GHz and a PowerVR G6200 GPU. As for the LG G4, it does not have the latest Snapdragon 810 but instead comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chipset, a hexa-core CPU with four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.44 GHz and two Cortex-A57 cores clocked at 1.82 GHz along with an Adreno 418 GPU.

Memory

The memory slot of the Xperia M5 actually allows for the addition of up to 200 GB of external storage while the version on the LG G4 supports up to 128 GB. As for RAM, each has 3 GB on board.

Price

The LG G4 is priced at $199 with a two-year contract from a carrier while the pricing of the Xperia M5 has yet to be revealed.
