As PlayStation celebrates its 20th Anniversary, Sony Computer Entertainment has launched a Japanese website dedicated to the premier gaming console that changed the world forever. Its two-minute trailer might just even bring hardcore PlayStation gamers to tears, featuring nostalgic and well-loved games, and friends and families coming together.

The Japanese tech giant that dominate consumer electronics first announced a new console back in 1993, but the launch of the first-ever PlayStation took place on Dec. 3, 1994. It went on to become the first video game console to ship 100 million units.

It was in 1998 when the Dual Shock Controller was tossed into the picture. The same period also saw the adoption of CD instead of the more common Cartridge games.

The next PS model came over half a decade later. PlayStation 2 was released in 2000, and holds the record for the best-selling home console in history with 155 million units sold as of December 2012.

In 2005, Sony released the handheld spin-off device PlayStation Portable, or PSP. Its successor, PS Vita, was launched in 2011.

The third installment, PlayStation 3, was introduced in 2006, the same year the online PlayStation Store emerged. Sony has reported more than 80 million units retailed as of 2013.

Sony recognizes the ongoing need to inject more cutting-edge technology into gaming seven years later when it unveiled PlayStation 4, which sold more than 1 million units within 24 hours of launch. The next-gen PS4 easily snagged another feat for the company – the fastest selling console in history.

In August, Sony confirmed that it had sold more than 10 million PS4 units worldwide, alongside 30 million games vended.

Sony's PlayStation has given birth to continuous improvement in video game consoles. Twenty years later, it has created and reinvented the landscape of gaming, and challenged competitors to always bring their A-game.

Up until today, Microsoft and Nintendo still trail PlayStation in terms of sales and fanbase worldwide.
