'Sleepy Hollow' season 4 news and spoilers: Who is the new Witness? series to introduce new enemies and allies

(Facebook/SleepyHollow)Season 4 will introduce a new Witness, new characters, and a new nemesis for Ichabod Crane.

"Sleepy Hollow" has a long, steep road ahead if it ever wants to regain its lost glory. The once-popular series has been rebooted and fans are waiting to see what the fourth season would bring.

The series is a classic case of how quickly bad writing destroys a great series. The first season of "Sleepy Hollow" was well-received and critically acclaimed for its fun mythology. It was even named "one of the best TV shows of 2013." The second season also received good ratings, although fans were disappointed that more focus was given Katrina Crane (Katia Winter) and less on Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie), the Witness.

Things came to a head in season 3, which saw Mills sacrificing herself in the finale to stop The Hidden One (Peter Mensah). The decision to kill off Abbie Mills was roundly derided by "Sleepy Hollow" fans, who accused the network of racial and gender bias.

It actually came as a big surprise to a lot of viewers when "Sleepy Hollow" was renewed for a fourth season. Even Fox Entertainment's president, David Madden, admitted that picking the show up for another season was a tough decision to make, as Beharie and Tom Mison were the "spine" of the show. However, Madden said he was convinced by "Sleepy Hollow's" creative department to give the series another shot.

So what can fans expect from season 4? For starters, a new Witness is set to be revealed. At the end of season 3, Ezra Mills (James McDaniel) revealed to Crane (Mison) that there must always be two Witnesses and hinted that the next one is also a member of Abbie's family.

It's possible that the next Witness is Diana Malhotra (Janina Gavankar), Crane's new partner — an ex-military officer and mother of one. The character has been described as a Homeland Security agent who doesn't believe in the supernatural.

Aside from Diana, season 4 will also be introducing new characters like Malcolm Dreyfuss (Jeremy Davies), an eccentric billionaire and reportedly Crane's new nemesis. There's also Jake Wells (Jerry MacKinnon) and Alex Norwood (Rachel Melvin). The former is a research analyst who's work cataloging supernatural activity is validated with Crane's arrival, while the latter is described as an engineering prodigy who can create weapons and gadgets as the need arises.

"Sleepy Hollow" season 4 is expected to air early 2017.
