Scooby-Doo is probably one of the longest-running animated series to date. It premiered in 1969 and is still going strong in TV, with an upcoming series launching later this year. But Scooby and the gang have also made several appearances on the big screen. And a new movie is again hitting theaters in 2018.

Warner Bros. has promised that fans of the Hanna-Barbera original will not be asking "Scooby-Dooby doo, where are you?" in 2018, as Scooby will definitely be featuring in a new animated movie.

Directing the 2018 "Scooby-Doo" film is Tony Cervone, who also directed this year's direct-to-video film, "Scooby-Doo! and KISS: Rock and Roll Mystery." Joining Cervone in this project as the screenplay writer, is Matt Lieberman.

Scooby-Doo is a talking male Great Dane, mostly attributed as Shaggy's dog. He goes with Shaggy and his friends, Fred, Daphne, and Velma, as they investigate supernatural mysteries. He is also sometimes joined by his nephew, Scrappy-Doo. He has a speech impediment and uses the catchphrase "Sooby-Dooby doo!"

The last two theater releases of "Scooby-Doo" films were all live-action films. Actors who stepped into the roles of the Scooby gang were Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, Linda Cardellini as Velma, and Neil Fanning as the voice of Scooby-Doo.

The first live-action movie was released in 2002 and was followed by the sequel "Monsters Unleashed" in 2004. The 2018 film, therefore, will be the first animated theatrical film to feeature Scooby and his friends.

There have been several animated Scooby-Doo films but all were either direct-to-TV or direct-to-video. Wikipedia lists a total of eight animated telefilms and thirty direct-to-video films and specials.

The newest "Scooby-Doo" movie was first announced in 2013. Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, who produced both of the live-action theatrical movies, are also producing the animated film.

The upcoming "Scooby-Doo" film is set to be released on Sept. 21, 2018.
