Samsung Gear VR 2 release date, rumors: Newly leaked render hints at bigger FOV, may support USB-C

(Samsung)Official product render for Samsung Gear VR

Samsung Electronics' next mobile virtual reality (VR) headset is set to immerse its fans in a more stimulating experience.

In a set of leaks published by Onleaks, it was revealed that the second consumer edition of the VR headset will be sporting a slightly grown measurement, which is expected to come at 207(W) x 122(D) x 98.5(H) millimeters (mm). The previous model came at 201.9(W) x 116.4(D) x 92.6(H) mm. Moreover, it was indicated that the upcoming device may be shifting from the standardized micro universal serial bus (USB) to the incoming USB-C type.

Meanwhile, the most significant technical upping that may be seen in the next iteration will be its diagonal field of view (FOV) from 96 degrees from its predecessor to 110 degrees, a notable shift in potential immersion.

The color and design of the next consumer edition are notably shifting as well. The leaks have suggested that the upcoming Gear VR will be shifting from predominantly white to black. It should be noted that the Galaxy brand has always been leaning more on the white side. As such, the said shift will be considered as a welcome change as the previous color has led to some distraction in its internal viewer part of the headset.  As the next gear will be sporting the upcoming device, Samsung Galaxy Note 7, the expected shift in color may come in handy for the new entry from the Galaxy Note series.

On the other hand, the South Korean tech firm is tight-lipped in terms of the upcoming gear's price. The previous iteration was retailed at $99, and it wouldn't be surprising if the company tags the new Gear VR with a similar price. The imminent launch is slated to arrive on Tuesday, Aug. 2, at Samsung's special "unpacked" event, which is set to take place in New York City. The Samsung Gear VR 2 may be launched with the new Galaxy Note 7 at the said event.
