Samsung Galaxy Note 5 release date, design, features: upcoming device could come with foldable display, patent design suggests
After recent reports of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 arriving with a S-Pen stylus along with an auto-eject function, and a fancy new USB Type-C port for faster data transfer and charging, the upcoming phablet is now expected to feature an advanced foldable display.
Samsung is reportedly developing the Galaxy Note 5 (internally codenamed Project Noble), along with the second-generation Galaxy Note 5 Edge (internally codenamed Project Zero 2). According to earlier rumors, the Galaxy Note 5 is expected to sport a 5.9 inch 4K Super AMOLED UHD display with 2160 x 3840 pixel resolution protected by Gorilla Glass 5 and is likely to be powered by a new Exynos 7422 chipset that could offer an all-in-one processing solution. The Galaxy Note 5 will also get the USB-C port advantage of a small, reversible plug, fast transfer rate, and high power delivery for fast charging.
Samsung now reportedly plans to use its advanced foldable display design to upgrade its future Galaxy Note units. Back in 2013, Samsung had applied for patent No. 30-0757696 with the Korean Intellectual Property Office, featuring technology for a foldable tablet patent with two seams, along with a flexible screen that can be folded into three segments.
In November 2014, Lee Chang-hoon, vice-president of Samsung Electronics business strategic group, had discussed the company's mid-long term plans of incorporating its devices with foldable displays at the Samsung Investor Forum in New York. According to Chang-hoon, Samsung would incorporate the advanced foldable displays in the company's upcoming 10-inch tablet and 5.5-inch smartphone over the next 18 months.
There is a strong possibility of the Galaxy Note 5 being launched in September this year, as its predecessor, the successful Galaxy Note 4 released in 2014, will have completed a circle of one year in the market by then. Based on Chang-hoon's comments, the Galaxy Note 5 could arrive with a foldable display, similar to the Nintendo 3DS, which has two-displays with an advanced hinge folding into different positions.
Samsung is yet to officially comment about incorporating foldable display in the Galaxy Note 5, but all will be revealed by September this year.
