'Salem' season 2 spoilers: Will John Alden live? Samuel Wainwright is mysterious doctor

(WGN America/Official Facebook page)A witch war brews as "Salem" returns in April, 2015.

The little town of Salem is wrought with witches from every corner, some hiding in plain sight such as young and beautiful Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery). Season one of WGN America's bone-chilling, nail-biting historical drama "Salem" left many cliffhangers and unanswered questions as the season drew to a close after Mary triggered the Grand Rite.

Season two will start right where season one left off. As Salem becomes privy to a brewing witch war, new threats and enemies are vying for Mary's power. However, fans are most curious to know the fate of John Alden (Shane West) as he was shot and left bleeding towards the end of season one. Luckily, the Indians arrive just before the season comes to a close. Executive producer Brannon Braga tells Zap2it that the Indians are particularly interested in John Alden, since they saved his life before. He said, "What interest would the Indians even have in John? What is it about John that they've now saved him twice? So there's a mystery that we're going to explore out in those woods."

Another intriguing storyline is the introduction of Mary's son (Oliver Bell), who was given to the devil. His character seems to be a wild card, as fans cannot decide if he will help Mary towards a path of greater evil or redemption. Braga further muses, "Is this going to put her on a path of redemption or a path of deeper (evil)? The forces around her are using the child to control her. She was ready to bolt."

Season two will also welcome new characters. Stuart Townsend plays Samuel Wainwright, a mysterious doctor who want to uncover Salem's secrets, according to Dead Central. Lucy Lawless appears as Countess Marburg and a German witch and Joe Doyle portrays the role of her son. Fans are also excited to see what Anne (Tamzin Merchant) will do with the knowledge that she is a powerful witch, possibly more powerful than Mary.

"Salem" season 2 airs on Sunday, April 5 at 10 p.m. EST.
