Earlier this week, center Amar'e Stoudemire officially announced his retirement after 14 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He retired as a New York Knick, but it is said he wanted to go out as a member of the Phoenix Suns although it was not granted. 

It would have been the best way for Stoudemire to end his career. Before suiting up for the Knicks, Dallas Mavericks, and the Miami Heat, he represented the Suns. 

In Stoudemire's time in Phoenix, he won Rookie of the Year (2002-03 season) and earned five of his six All-Star selections. It was not just the feats, but also his contributions to the franchise.

Stoudemire, together with the likes of Steve Nash, Grant Hill, Shawn Marion, and Leandro Barbosa helped the Suns contend in the Western Conference for years. Sadly in 2010, his stint in Phoenix ended when he entered free agency and went to the Big Apple. 

In a report by The Arizona Republic, Stoudemire revealed that for the past few years he was trying to return to Phoenix but was denied. 

"The last two years, we made phone calls to Phoenix but I wasn't getting any positive response," Stoudemire shared. 

"That would've been the perfect way to go out. I didn't want to beg Phoenix. My heart was in two places – Phoenix and New York. I just went where I was wanted," the 33-year-old added. 

Stoudemire went on to speak about his great times in Phoenix and expressed love for his fans in the city. But he also said, "I put forth the effort to finish my career in Phoenix but it wasn't well-received."

Basketball aficionados and fans will remember Stoudemire for his intensity, hustle, and energy each time he steps on the court, plus his highlights, which are mostly in the paint and dunks.
