"Penny Dreadful" ended its second season last Sunday with a heartbreaking death along with other shocking surprises. Now, fans of the British-American horror drama are painfully awaiting what this finale means for the upcoming third season.

Showtime confirmed last June that the John Logan-created TV series will be returning for a nine-episode third season and they sure prepared their fans for a heart-stopping new season with a shocking finale. Though Sir Malcolm Murray's (Timothy Dalton) rescue was successful, with Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) and Ethan Lawrence Talbot (Josh Hartnett) easily taking down Evelyn Poole (Helen McCrory), it lead to the death of his ally Sembene (Danny Sapani). Now everyone is ridden with guilt; how this guilt is going to change the characters' lives is what season three will be all about.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, creator, writer, and co-executive producer John Logan pointed out that the past two seasons have made most of the characters stronger through their intimate and close relationship with each other. In the coming season, though, some of them are going to be alone and with no support to turn to.

He told viewers to be on the lookout for how this time apart will change the characters and for that one event that will draw the characters back together.

He also hinted on a very important change, or rather addition, to season three of "Penny Dreadful." He told Entertainment Weekly, "I can tell you this—and this is such a tease, and I am sorry for it — but after two years I am finally adding another famous literary character. It's been fun going into another writer's brain and bringing one of those great characters back into our world."

"Penny Dreadful" draws its name from the term "penny dreadfuls," which describes the sensational and lurid 19th Century British fiction. The show itself involves 19th Century fictional characters like Dorian Gray and Victor Frankenstein.
