Oklahoma City Thunder free agency, trade rumors 2016: Dion Waiters an unrestricted free agent

Teams searching for a shooting guard this off-season may have found what they are looking for as the Oklahoma City Thunder rescinded their $6.8 million qualifying offer to Dion Waiters, making him an unrestricted free agent.

(Reuters/Mark D. Smith-USA TODAY Sports)Guard Dion Waiters is now an unrestricted free agent.

Before this, Waiters was a restricted free agent, which meant Oklahoma City could match any offer sheet he signs with a different team. Now that the offer is revoked, the 24-year-old is one hundred percent available on the free agency market.

The move was not surprising considering that the Thunder are likely trying to figure out what roster changes must be done next following the departure of Kevin Durant earlier this free agency.

A few days ago, Waiters was rumored to capture the interest of a number of teams and two of them are the Philadelphia 76ers and the Brooklyn Nets. Because of the recent change in his free agency status, these teams can now sign him to a deal without the worry of the Thunder trying to match any offer.

Waiters' numbers dipped a little last season but he was still an efficient piece off the bench for the Thunder. In two seasons playing for Oklahoma City, the former Syracuse Orange fit well in his role as a backup. But he can also be a starter, especially for rebuilding teams like the Sixers and Nets.

Last season, Waiters played in 78 games (15 starts) averaging 9.8 points (career-low), 2.6 rebounds, two assists and one steal per contest. His playing time also decreased to 27.6 minutes each game with André Roberson emerging at the no. 2 position for the Thunder.

It is likely that Waiters' time in Oklahoma City is over now that he is an unrestricted free agent. As squads continue to better their rosters this off-season, expect him to secure a contract immediately since he is one of the remaining "big names" in free agency.
