Fans of the Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson) pairing on "New Girl" will be happy to know that the couple's relationship will take center stage in the upcoming season.

According to creator and showrunner Liz Meriwether, who recently just got engaged, Nick and Jess' relationship was always a part of the plan. "For me, it's the heart of the show. I knew we were going to come back to it, but we had to figure out a way to get back into it that feels good for the show and the characters and will allow us to have stories," she told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview.

But this time around, Meriwether explained that the pairing will be introduced "in a new way." Jess' feelings for Nick are starting to resurface, especially after the reappearance of her ex-boyfriend, Sam (David Walton). Moreover, Nick's fling with Reagan has seriously amped up the tension among everyone.

Megan Fox, who played Reagan in the previous season, is widely speculated to be returning for season 6. Fox stood in for Deschanel when the latter went on maternity leave. Now that Jess is back, there are numerous possibilities on how everything can play out.

Meriwether has stated that she wants Fox to reprise her role as Reagan on the show, but nothing is for certain at the moment. On the other hand, the showrunner has also voiced out her desire for Nasim Pedrad, who played Aly in season 5, to return as well.

Fans should brace themselves for a rocky new season, as the show is set to change the dynamic of the whole group. Supporters of the Jess and Nick love pairing should cross their fingers.

As for the sixth season's premiere, no exact date has been set in stone. However, it is widely believed that "New Girl" season 6 will start airing sometime later this year.
