Microsoft Surface Phone release date: Three variants reportedly designed for the business sector; Microsoft VP teases high-end innovations

(Reuters/Lucy Nicholson)Microsoft to release three variants of their Surface Phone in the spring of 2017.

Microsoft is putting into good use all the lessons it learned with the disappointing run of its Windows 10 Mobile and is changing gears.

There have been reports that Microsoft's tenuous hold on the smartphone market had become shakier. The company's Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL did not exactly live up to expectations, something that experts say was due to Microsoft's confusing operating system and apps.

Despite that, the company is still giving smartphones another go, something that Microsoft's Corporate Vice President Kevin Gallo emphasized during this year's Build Tour. Gallo revealed during the Build Tour that the company has not abandoned the Windows Phone and that the product is "fully supported."

"There's really no change in what our direction or strategy is with respect to releasing the Windows Phone software," Gallo explained.

However, he did add that there will be some changes on the hardware side of things as the company taps on its experience and success with the Windows 10 on desktops and hinted at "some high end and category innovation" that they've done with the Surface line.

Gallo also revealed that Microsoft will be switching gears. Instead of trying to come out with affordable phones for consumers, the upcoming Microsoft Surface Phones will be designed specifically for the business sector.

The company will reportedly come out with three variants of the Surface Phone, with one of those handsets teased to carry a Qualcomm Snapdragon 830 CPU that will be backed by 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB storage. The base variant is said to have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor and 3 GB RAM. However, there have also been reports teasing one of the variants will have an Intel Atom X3 Processor.

All three variants will reportedly have aluminum and magnesium bodies with 5.5-inch AMOLED display, 20-megapixel Carl Zeiss rear camera, and an 8-megapixel front camera. The Surface Phone will allegedly come with a USB C-port and a Surface Pen, plus extra features like a compass, fingerprint reader, and proximity sensors.

The Microsoft Surface Phone is expected to be released early 2017.
