Matt Damon may star in Catholic Church sex scandal film
Rumors swirling are pegging actor Matt Damon to star in the forthcoming film about the multiple sex scandals in Massachusetts and the Roman Catholic Church diocese that covered it up.
According to sources for The Wrap, filmmakers involved in Tom McCarthy's dramatization of the events have approached Damon to star as an unnamed member of the Boston Globe investigative journalism team that brought the world reeling.
Produced by DreamWorks and Participant Media, the film has been described by press releases to be in the vein of All the President's Men; a procedural journalistic thriller that follows the trail of child abuse accusations all the way to Cardinal Bernard Francis Law, the Archbishop of Boston who covered up the scandals.
The stories, published as a series by The Boston Globe during Jan. 6-7, 2002, rocked the Catholic community Massachusetts, as well as the wider world.
In the fallout from the reports and increasing spotlight coverage over the following months, Cardinal Law resigned on Dec. 13, but not before publicity apologizing to the victims and families for his complicity in the events.
The explosive story, which led to more accusations in Massachusetts and around the world, lifted The Boston Globe team the Pulitzer Prize in 2003.
Damon was born and grew up in Cambridge in Massachusetts and has ties to the communities affected by this nightmarish scandal.
He also has shown a stunning versatility in participating in projects as varied as this year's sci-fi thriller, Elysium, as well as comedies like 30 Rock.
However, he has increasingly shown a predisposition for political projects that speak to ethical issues of our times. This includes 2004's Syriana and his co-written passion project from last year, Promised Land.
Undoubtedly, this scandal provides an opportunity to explore the abuse of power somewhere that is very close to home.
It is unclear who Damon will play, but the project is certainly being fast tracked in its growing industry heat if Damon comes aboard.
