Mario Kart 8: Top-selling game during June, details on upcoming Mercedes-Benz DLC
Mario Kart 8 sold more than 470,000 in June, making it the best selling video game on a single platform.
"These results reinforce the power of the Mario Kart franchise and speak to a bright future for the Wii U platform," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "History has shown that Mario Kart games tend to have an extremely long tail. We fully expect Mario Kart 8 to continue to drive momentum for our hardware and software business through the holidays and into the foreseeable future."
It was also announced during the 74th Annual Shareholder's Meeting of Nintendo that the game has already sold over 2 million copies worldwide.
This success also augmented Wii U sales to 233% versus the previous year.
Mario Kart 8 features all the favorite Super Mario characters racing in twisting anti-gravity tracks in Grand Prix, Time Trials and VS Race modes.
The game has also announced that a Mercedes-Benz DLC is coming this summer.
Mario Kart 8 owners residing in North America and Europe will be able to download the Mercedes-Benz GLA, marking first time the game will actually feature a real car.
Other than the ad previewed in Japan, there are no additional details that Nintendo has provided the gaming community yet.
Nintendo is somewhat cramming to stay in tune with rivals, and Forbes has a few suggestions on how it can take advantage of the perfect opportunity that Mario Kart 8 is presenting them.
A lot is riding on the shoulders of this phenomenal game, but the last E3 showcases have shown that Nintendo is still on the running to stay relevant and successful amid tough competition presented by Sony PlayStation and Microsoft's Xbox consoles.
Super Smash Bros 4 will also be coming to Nintendo 3DS and Wii U exclusively in October and during the holidays respectively.
