Light L16 specs: Point-and-shoot camera with 16 lenses takes DSLR-like photos
Nowadays, with the advent of very capable smartphones, people have opted to use their mobile devices to capture photos, especially if they're on the go. The rise of smartphones has inevitably led to the decline of the point-and-shoot camera industry.
Light, a startup photography company, intends to change that with the release of its unique point-and-shoot camera, the L16. The L16 is described as "a multi-aperture computational camera." Its unique factor comes from the 16 individual lenses featured in the camera. Five have a focal length of 35 mm, five have it at 70 mm and the rest have a 150 mm focal length.
The company has utilized the technology and the lenses that are typically found in today's smartphones.
"We repurpose and leverage the billions of dollars invested in these little smartphone cameras. The economics and quality have become very compelling in these," CEO Dave Grannan revealed. "This is how cameras will be made in the future."
According to Light, the L16 creates stunning high-quality images with up to 52 MP resolution. For each shot, 10 camera lenses fire simultaneously, which enable the L16 to capture details at multiple fixed focal lengths. Then, images are computationally fused to create professional-looking photos.
The L16 also comes with sophisticated depth-mapping technology that enables the camera to adjust focus and depth of field, even after the photo has been taken. With the lenses ranging from 35 mm to 150 mm, the L16 has true optical zoom that takes photos without fuzziness or pixelation.
The camera also comes with a 5-inch touchscreen display with an Android interface. It is easy to use and allows users to capture incredible photos on the go. The images can also be edited using its on-board features. Moreover, its built-in Wi-Fi allows users to share their images to their social media accounts.
The L16 is now available for pre-order until Nov. 6 and costs $1,299. After the said date, the price jumps to $1,699. The camera won't begin shipping until summer 2016.
