Leica has introduced the M-D Typ 262, the newest digital M Generation camera joining its rangefinder system of cameras, which includes M and M-P (Typ 240), the M (Typ 262), and the M Monochrom (Typ 246).

The Leica M-D Typ 262 was designed with "Das Wescentliche" or "The Essentials" in mind. The camera's features were streamlined to include only the most essential features of photography. In order to truly focus on what is important — the picture — and to minimize distractions, the German camera manufacturer has limited the technical features to the shutter speed, aperture, distance, and ISO sensitivity. 

As such, the M-D Typ 262 is the first model in the rangefinder family to come without an LCD monitor screen. This allows photographers to anticipate how their photos have turned out — similar to film photography in the past. The space is instead occupied by the ISO sensitivity settings, which range from 200 to 6400. The quiet shutter cocking system also enables two frames per second. In continuous shooting mode, the camera can shoot up to three frames per second

The Leica M-D Typ 262 features a 24-megapixel high-resolution CMOS full-frame sensor that delivers high-quality images. With the Maestro image processor, the camera is also able to quickly process captured images. Photographers are able to save exposures in RAW (DNG) format to allow for post-processing. To frame photos, the viewfinder comes with a range setting of 2m and a 0.68x magnification.

On the other hand, the Leica M-D Typ 262 does not support video recording or Live View.

In terms of design, the M-D Typ 262 also comes with a simple yet functional design. The camera comes with an all-metal aluminum/magnesium body, leather covering, and brass plates on the base and on the top. Leica's signature red dot logo has also been removed to give the camera a more inconspicuous appearance. Furthermore, shutter noise is also almost imperceptible to ensure discretion when shooting.

The Leica M-D Typ 262 is now available to purchase for $5,995.
