'Kim Kardashian' app valued almost $200M; Dethroned by Tom Hanks' 'Hanx' typewriter app
Glu Mobile's "create your own celebrity and rise to fame and fortune" Kim Kardashian: Hollywood app is now worth nearly $200 million.
"It might be our biggest game of the year," Glu Mobile Chief Executive Officer Niccolo de Masi said on Bloomberg TV.
Despite early criticisms of the app, Kanye West's better half was delighted with how the public received it.
"I didn't think it would do this well, and I wasn't underestimating it at all, but I'm really pleasantly surprised with how it's turned out," Kardashian said.
In July, the developers also revealed that Kim Kardashian: Hollywood had generated $1.6 million within the first five days on the market.
The app is free to download, but the moneymaking scheme comes with the in-app purchases.
The ultimate goal of the app is to reach "A-list" status.
In order to climb to the ladder of superstardom, a player starting out as an E-list "nobody" will have to complete tasks such as walking on fashion shows and posing for photo shoots.
Kim bursts onto the scene every now and then as an agent to invite players to party or set the player up with a date.
Mrs. West described her role in the top-selling app as a "friend taking you through your journey of Hollywood to become on the A-list".
The gaming app also features Kardashian's nasally sounding Southern California accent.
"You just have to make sure that your parental controls are all set," the reality star told Matt Lauer of Today Entertainment. "I think you just have to be responsible, and don't have your credit card linked to where your kid can just spend if they want to, or ask permission."
Bloomberg puts everything in perspective and perhaps is right on the money when it noted that, "It's easy to get sucked into the mindless tapping, and the setup is a knowing, oftentimes funny parody of the Kardashian world."
The Kardashian app's reign on top of the app store charts was however cut short by a genuine Hollywood A-lister: Tom Hanks and his nostalgic Hanx typewriter app.
