'Jessica Jones' season 2 release date updates: Showrunner says Kilgrave unlikely to return; series to return in 2018

"Jessica Jones" season 2 is still about two years away from returning to Netflix, yet fans are already anticipating what challenges our heroine will be facing. One question that fans really want answered is whether Kilgrave will be returning.

"Jessica Jones" (Krysten Ritter) was such a big hit for Marvel that it was inevitable for the show to have a second season. But how do you top the magnificence of the first season, particularly when it comes to the evilness of Kilgrave? According to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, you don't.

"No one is ever going to beat David Tennant as Kilgrave, so you don't do that," Rosenberg explained to EW. "The biggest mistake would be to try to repeat that."

Kilgrave is admittedly the most formidable foe that Jones had ever faced. The mind-controlling psychopath had once controlled the powerful private investigator before she was able to break free from him. The show's first season ended with Jones snapping Kilgrave's neck. Despite this, a lot of fans reportedly want Kilgrave to return, pointing out that in the comics, the villain can place himself in a death-like state while healing from his injuries.

However, Kilgrave's return is unlikely to happen as Rosenberg is not keen on repeating storylines. But the EP does promise fans that they will continue to see how Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor) and Jones' relationship will evolve.

"I'm interested in relationships, whether they be romantic, or family, or friends, or professional — that's what's interesting to me, is Jessica in relationship to people," Rosenberg added.

Rosenberg also admitted that developing the second season of the series was more difficult since the show's writers and producers have to know what happens to Jones in "The Defenders" first. Luckily, "The Defenders" showrunners Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez have been sharing material on their plans for the heroes of Hell's Kitchen.

Unfortunately, with "The Defenders," "Luke Cage," and "Iron Fist" set to be aired in Netflix first before "Jessica Jones" can return, fans will have to wait until 2018.
