Indiana Pacers free agency, trade rumors 2016: Team nearing agreement with Aaron Brooks for one-year deal
The Indiana Pacers are doing a splendid job in adding pieces this off-season and are closing in on acquiring another quality player in veteran point guard Aaron Brooks.
According to reports, the Pacers and Brooks are close to reaching an agreement for a one-year pact.
Brooks spent the past two seasons with the Chicago Bulls as a backup. Last season, the 31-year-old saw action in 69 games and averaged 7.1 points, 1.5 rebounds, with 2.6 assists in 16.1 minutes per outing.
Before Brooks' run at the the Windy City, he had stops with the Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings, and the Denver Nuggets. Aside from playing in the National Basketball Association (NBA), he also has international experience playing in China.
If the move is accomplished, the Pacers will have a stacked point guard position. Earlier this off-season, they traded for former All-Star Jeff Teague. Aside from Teague, Indiana also has Ty Lawson, Rodney Stuckey, and Joe Young at the no. 1 position.
Expect Teague to take the starting job at the point guard position for the Pacers in the 2016-17 season. This means Brooks is going to compete for minutes against Lawson, Stuckey, and Young.
Because it is crowded at the position, the Pacers might complete a deal this off-season to part ways with one or two of them. The one most likely to be dealt is Lawson, who failed to regain his old form in the 2015-16 season.
The impending arrival of Brooks shows how much the Pacers want to improve their roster ahead of a new campaign. Besides the players mentioned, some of their notable additions this off-season are Al Jefferson and Thaddeus Young.
In the 2015-16 season, the Pacers played well and finished seventh in the Eastern Conference with a 45-37 record. Sadly, their postseason run lasted only until the first round as they were eliminated by the Toronto Raptors.
