'How to Train Your Dragon 3' release date: Rumored reasons behind premiere delay
After Fox's announcement to move the premiere of the third installment of "How to Train Your Dragon," several rumors have surfaced about the reason of the delay. Fans, on the other hand, are not happy with the news.
The release date for "How to Train Your Dragon" is now moved from May 18, 2018 to June 29, 2018. According to reports, the reason behind the numerous times of delay is to adhere to the animation studios' strategic moves for marketing purposes, which is not surprising for any movie studio. The need for a schedule shift is to put it in a best spot as the competition for animated films gets tighter. It will now replace the previous premiere date of "The LEGO Movie 2."
The delay will also benefit the film because it is eyed to be one of the films slated for the 2018's summer blockbuster season. Since this is also Fox's last distribution deal with DreamWorks Animation, it makes sense that the film distributor wants it to end successfully, especially in terms of revenue.
However, delays and change of release date are nothing new in Hollywood. This is usually to gain a better stance in business.
As for the plot direction of the upcoming installment, director Dean DeBois told Collider about his insights on "How to Train Your Dragon 3."
"[Dragon 3 is] the culmination of Hiccup's coming of age," the director revealed. "Both he and Toothless are now chiefs of their respective tribes, and it's a dueling story where you have both characters trying to do what's right for their kind, and an eventual outcome where Hiccup is able to stand on his own."
He added that they will take the story to its beginnings in the books, which is when Hiccup recollects the memories in his childhood when dragons still existed. Now that he is an adult, he wonders if the dragons can still come back.
