'Hell on Wheels' season 6 canceled; spin-off series rumored?
Despite the five-year run of AMC's historical drama "Hell on Wheels," the network's decision to end the show with season 5 is final. Fans can no longer expect a season 6, at least on the network. However, there are reports speculating that it may get a spin-off series.
Last April, AMC released a press release announcing "Hell on Wheels" season 5 as the final chapter of the series. It will end with the last seven episodes. The finale is set to premiere on Saturday, July 23.
"Making this show has been the highlight of my career," said showrunner John Wirth. "I can't imagine a better cast, crew, group of writers or network. Thank you, Charlie Collier, Joel Stillerman and Susie Fitzgerald for supporting us every step of the way."
Along with the cancellation of "Hell on Wheels," AMC also revealed that it will be showcasing another Western content limited series, "The American West." It will be under the Stephen David Entertainment. The company president Stephen David said, "The series will allow viewers the opportunity to explore an era of famous outlaws and lawmen who shaped American history, connected through a larger story that's never been told before in this way."
Despite the sad news, there are rumors circulating that AMC might create a spin-off series of "Hell on Wheels." This is based on the fact that the network also did a spin-off series, "Fear the Walking Dead," for one of its popular shows, "The Walking Dead." However, it should be noted that the creation of the spin-off was mainly because of the great ratings performance of the main series, unlike the declining number of viewers for "Hell on Wheels."
Meanwhile, the historical drama will air its season 5 and series finale episode, titled "Done." It will show the government hearings and unpredictable outcomes that will bring new beginnings and endings for the heroes of "Hell on Wheels."
