Google Daydream VR will deliver rich, immersive experiences: what to expect

(Google)Google introduced its new mobile reality platform at the recently concluded I/O 2016.

Google VR head Clay Bavor took the stage during the Google I/O 2016 keynote to introduce Daydream, their new virtual reality platform that would be integrated into the new Android N OS. Daydream is a low-latency mobile VR platform that delivers rich and immersive experiences. It follows the Google Cardboard that provided an affordable and fun way to experience virtual reality.

VR Mode, found in the Android N OS, will allow users to experience virtual reality while using their favorite apps. Google has already created special VR-ready versions of apps like YouTube, Google Play, Google Photos, Google Street View, and more. Other companies like HBO and MLB have also started developing their own apps for Daydream.

While Daydream will be integrated to the Android N OS, most Android users will not be able to use this feature. Google's mobile VR platform uses a few technologies that have not been made available to currently released Android devices. Daydream will only be compatible with devices that have special sensors and screens. Currently, the Nexus 6P is the only smartphone that is compatible with Daydream.

Smartphone manufacturers like Samsung, HTC, LG, Huawei, Asus, Xiaomi ZTE, and Alcatel are believed to be working on their Daydream-compatible devices. Consumers should expect to see the first batch of compatible devices to arrive around the same time that Daydream launches.

Google also released designs for a comfortable headset and an intuitive controller that would serve as a blueprint for developers who would eventually release their own VR-ready products. Daydream provides developers with hardware and software platforms that would hopefully help them create rich and high-quality VR experiences.

Daydream was included in the Android N Preview 3 to allow developers to start working on their VR-related projects.

The Google Daydream VR platform will be released in the fall.
