Gear S2 3G vs Apple Watch: Gear S2 has a distinct advantage
While the Apple Watch has managed to capture a significant chunk of the smartwatch marketplace, other competitors like the Gear S2 3G have started to arrive to take it on. Here is how these two devices fare in a face off.
Design
In terms of design, the Apple Watch has several advantages, as it provides more options to users. There are three versions of it, the Apple Watch, the Apple Watch Sport and the high-end Apple Watch Edition. The body of the Apple Watch Sport is made from aluminum, while the Apple Watch features stainless steel and the Edition has a solid gold body. Additionally, there are two sizes available for the rectangular bodied Apple Watch: a smaller 38 mm version for women and a bigger 42 mm version for men. The Apple Watch lineup comes in several colors, including silver, gray, black, steel, yellow gold and rose gold, however, straps cannot be interchanged with others available in the market. As for the straps available for the Apple Watch, they are created from steel, leather or Fluoroelastomer. When it comes to water and dust proofing, the device has an IP67 rating and cannot be dunked in water.
As for the Gear S2 3G, it comes with a SIM card and so it can function as a smartphone with users making and receiving calls. Additionally, the round bodied device has GPS onboard and so users can track their runs without taking along a paired smartphone. However, when it comes to design, customers are limited to choosing from silver or dark gray colors, and additionally, the straps can only be swapped out with versions built specifically for the watch. There is also a rotating bezel on the Gear S2 3G, which allows users to quickly and easily navigate between apps and it is one of its best features. Finally, the device has an IP68 rating and can remain immersed in 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes.
When it comes to its operating system, the Gear S2 3G has Tizen onboard and is currently only compatible with Android devices, but iOS support is incoming. As for the Apple Watch, it is only compatible with iOS devices.
Display
Coming to display size and quality, the Gear S2 3G has a 1.2-inch super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels and a density of 302 pixels per inch. As for the Apple Watch, it comes with an AMOLED display and its smaller version measures 1.32 inches and has a resolution of 340 x 272 pixels, while its bigger model measures 1.5 inches and has a resolution of 312 x 390 pixels.
Specs
There is an S1 system on the Apple Watch and in terms of memory, the device has 8 GB onboard. As for the Gear S2 3G, it has a dual core processor along with 4 GB storage and 512 MB RAM.
Sensors
Here, the Gear S2 3G is ahead as it has GPS onboard, and has a heart rate sensor, barometer, gyroscope, ambient light sensor and accelerometer. On the Apple Watch are a heart rate sensor, ambient light sensor, gyroscope and accelerometer.
Price
The cheapest version of the Apple Watch costs $350 and its solid gold edition can cost up to $17,000. As for the Gear S2 3G, it is expected to cost around $350.
