'Empire' season 3 episode 4 spoilers: Andre teams up with Lucious; Hakeem starts to develop feelings for Nessa
"Empire's" third season is shaping up to be an intense one for Andre. The grief of losing his wife and child is clearly affecting his judgment as he's apparently teaming up with his father.
Lucious (Terrence Howard) and Cookie's (Taraji P. Henson) eldest son had always seemed to be the stable one in the family. After all, he's the one with the Wharton degree and the keen business sense. Unfortunately, the death of his wife has unmoored him from stability and it might only take a slight push before he follows in his father's footsteps.
Lucious is set to continue his heinous streak in episode 4 when he finally sees that Angelo (Taye Diggs) is a formidable rival for Cookie's affections. As for Lucious' new wife, Anika (Grace Byers) immediately causes trouble when she goes back to work at Empire. Meanwhile, Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray) begins to develop feelings for Nessa (Sierra A. McClain), but it seems the singer might be interested in another Lyon. On a more positive note, Jamal (Jussie Smollett) is finally able to face Freda Gatz (Bre-Z), which is a major step on his journey to recovery.
As for Andre (Trai Byers), the trailer for the upcoming episode, "Cupid Kills," shows that he might be throwing in his lot with Lucious. Father and son are seen riding around, with Lucious saying they're about to become a powerful team again. This quickly cuts to a shot of guns being readied, while a beat-up Tariq (Morocco Omari) says Lucious and Andre are about to go to war. Cookie's oldest son is also seen warning Nessa that "Shyne is exploding" before asking her if she's gonna take what's hers. Interestingly, the young woman returns the question to Andre, a subtle invitation for him to make his move. Andre is later seen trading punches with Shyne (Xzibit).
The trailer also teases Cookie and Angelo's burgeoning romance as the two step out, dressed to the nines, with the background music suggesting that they might be headed to the opera. The young politician also admits to Cookie that he believes they can make things work. The suceeding scene shows the pair out and about again but, this time, they're in Cookie's world. The high note of the clip comes at the end, when Lucious reminds Angelo that Cookie always finds her way back to him. But the politician disagrees and believes things will be different this time.
It's nice to see Cookie with a man so different from Lucious. Fans also don't have to worry about Angelo having a hidden, devious side as "Empire" showrunner Sanaa Hamri recently told TV Guide that he really is a decent human being.
"We do have characters that are who they are," the producer explained. "He just wants to do good. He's our Obama."
Episode 4 of "Empire" season 3 will be aired on Fox on Oct. 12 at 8 p.m.
