Detroit Tigers injury, roster news 2016: Catcher James McCann earns spot on disabled list with sprained ankle
Detroit Tigers catcher James McCann is sidelined for now after being placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained right ankle sustained in Monday's defeat to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
In a report by ESPN, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus expressed optimism regarding McCann's injury before he was placed on the disabled list, hoping it is not going to be a long-term concern.
McCann has only played four games so far this 2016 Major League Baseball (MLB) season. ESPN added that taking his place as Detroit's main catcher is Jarrod Saltalamacchia, with the club also "purchasing" the contract of veteran Bobby Wilson from the minors. Wilson now acts as the backup of Saltalamacchia at the position.
The injury is very unfortunate for McCann, who had a great rookie season and was also performing great this 2016 season.
"I'm young, so, hopefully, it heals quick," McCann said according to the Detroit Free Press, after the results of his magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a Grade 2 sprain.
"I hope for the best. I guess the saying is, 'It could have been a lot worse.' So I'm thankful for what it is," the 25-year-old added.
McCann may be out of action for more than 15 days, as the Detroit Free Press also mentioned that he is expected to be sidelined for 2-4 weeks.
The Tigers are having a great season so far, they have a 6-2 record for the second spot in the American League (AL) Central.
In the previous campaign, Detroit finished the regular season fifth in the AL Central and missed the postseason for the first time in five seasons. The Tigers surely want to be back in the playoffs and go for the World Series.
The injury to McCann is a tough one, but it is just a minor setback for the Tigers as they continue their splendid showing.
