"Criminal Minds" season 11 news: Emily Prentiss to return to the show; Interpol agent reportedly needs help in tracking a serial killer
One of the BAU's best agents is set to return in "Criminal Minds" season 11.
Countless "Criminal Minds" fans have been clamoring for this and now their dream is about to come true - former Special Agent Emily Prentiss will be coming back to the BAU.
CBS has confirmed in a press statement that Paget Brewster, who portrayed the kickass but kind FBI profiler, will be guest starring in an episode of "Criminal Minds" season 11 that's set to air in spring.
The former BAU member is apparently still working with Interpol and will reportedly ask for the team's help in capturing a notorious serial killer whose next victim is in America.
Prentiss joined the BAU in season 2, after Elle Greenaway (Lola Glaudini) abruptly left the team. While she initially appeared to have been assigned to the team as a spy for then director Erin Strauss (Jayne Atkinson), Prentiss quickly proved her worth and established herself as a competent and vital member of the BAU. Her departure at the end of season 7 was widely lamented by fans.
Her character had some of the most memorable story arcs of the series, as it underlined the strength of the profilers' friendship and bond with each other. Hardcore "Criminal Minds" fans undoubtedly remember how the team scrambled to save her from master criminal Ian Doyle in season 6 and how she returned the favor and came back to help JJ (AJ Cook) when she was taken by terrorists in the show's 200th episode.
It's safe to say that the BAU team was never the same after Prentiss' departure. The network tried to fill in the void left behind by Brewster's character by tapping Jeanne Tripplehorn to play Dr. Alex Blake in seasons 8 and 9. Jennifer Love Hewitt came onboard as Kate Callahan in season 10 and Aisha Tyler was tapped to play Dr. Tara Lewis for several episodes in season 11.
Brewster was apparently asked to come back to the series this season but ran into some scheduling conflicts. According to TV Line, the actress revealed during the TCA press tour that she was "hoping to jump in" and do several episodes while Cook was on maternity leave. However, her work on the Fox comedy series "Grandfathered" put a damper on the deal.
While it's disappointing that Prentiss will only be back for one episode, it's still better that none.
"Criminal Minds" season 11 airs every Wednesday on CBS.
