'Criminal Minds' season 11 episode 16 spoilers: BAU scrambles to search for the kidnapped Derek; agent finds comfort and strength from an unusual source
The FBI's Behavioural Analysis Unit (BAU) is rocked to the core as one of its pioneering members is kidnapped by an unknown UnSub.
Derek Morgan's (Shemar Moore) personal life has been in a good place this season, with the FBI agent appearing to have finally settled down with his girlfriend Savannah. But his whole life will soon be turned upside down in episode 16 of "Criminal Minds" season 11.
The previous episode ended with the burly agent being drugged and then kidnapped by several men. However, he was able to tell Savannah to call Hotch (Thomas Gibson) before he was overcome.
Reports have been swirling around for months about a special Derek-centric episode. As it turns out, not only will episode 16 showcase the agent and his father, it is also directed by fellow "Criminal Minds" star Gibson.
A synopsis for the episode succinctly states that the BAU scrambles to find and save their abducted colleague. However, the trailer for the upcoming episode, simply titled "Derek," might be hard for avid fans to watch as it shows Morgan being tortured. One scene shows a man at Morgan's shoulder, talking to him and apparently giving him advice. Viewers will no doubt recognize him as Danny Glover, who's been tapped to play Morgan's father, Hank. The deceased police officer tells his son that if he lets the perp inside his head, "there's no way out." That little bit of advice seems to help Morgan as he looks cool and collected even as the UnSub flashes a knife at his face.
With one of their own in danger, the members of the team are feeling the pressure. Penelope (Kirsten Vangsness) is seen in her office, chanting that "he's going to be ok," Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) looks worried and JJ (A.J Cook) is seen trying to hold back her tears as she attempts to calm down. The clip ends with the agent demanding answers from his captor and is later seen and heard screaming in pain.
The episode will no doubt go down as one of the series' most memorable ones, especially with the show's decision to cast Danny Glover as Morgan's father. As "Criminal Minds" showrunner Erica Messer explained to TV Line, the reason why Morgan "needs to call on this protector" in that particular moment will be revealed in a beautiful way.
