Cleveland Cavaliers free agency, trade rumors 2016: Dahntay Jones released but comeback could be a possibility
Last Saturday, the Cleveland Cavaliers announced that guard Dahntay Jones was waived, which makes him an unrestricted free agent. However, the reigning champions are not counting out the possibility of him re-signing.
According to a report by ESPN, Jones could return to the Cavaliers if he clears waivers.
On April 13 this year, the Cavs signed Jones and on the same day he made his debut for the team in a defeat to the Detroit Pistons. The game was the last for Cleveland in the 2015-16 regular season.
In the playoffs, Jones saw action in 15 games for the Cavs averaging 1.1 points in 3.3 minutes per contest.
Despite the limited playing time, Jones was rewarded, after winning his first title with the Cavaliers.
When Jones was inked by the Cavs, he was not expected to get significant minutes and was likely brought in for assurance, also to add depth at the no. 2 and 3 positions.
If Jones gets another chance with the Cavaliers, he is likely to have the same role as a member of the bench. There is also a chance he will not even step on the court with Mike Dunleavy Jr. being added by the franchise via trade earlier last month.
Before suiting up for the Cavs last season, Jones had stops with the Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, Dallas Mavericks, Atlanta Hawks, and the Los Angeles Clippers. Aside from this, he also had stints in the NBA Developmental League (D-League).
With Jones available on the market, teams seeking for a guard or veteran presence might be targeting him. But his run with the Cavaliers last season may have affected his value as a player and could prevent him from securing a contract with another squad, although there is always the possibility that the Cavaliers are going to bring him back for another year.
