2K Australia and Gearbox Software's Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel release date is here, as the title hits store shelves across North America on Oct. 14. The shooter RPG is available for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Already, reviews of the game are plentiful, but in a review roundup, many reviews display a number of disappointments with regard to the Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel gameplay experience and visual fidelity.

Mashable's Chelsea Stark was among those privileged to get her hands on the new Borderlands title.

"Overall, all that stuff was great, but it was just building upon that game. The biggest problem with Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, out this week, is it feels like a very large expansion for Borderlands 2, instead of a stand-alone game with new ideas," she noted.

Gaming enthusiast Nathan Grayson of Kotaku dubbed the game as "another Borderlands," filled with the usual "gun crate of wide-open-space wandering" that can be quite boring.

"The game does pick up as time goes on, but even then there were stretches where a co-op friend and I were like, 'Hey, you wanna do something else?' and then 'Oh, right: review.' Which is all to say, under any other circumstance we'd have gotten bored and walked away for a while after, say, an over-long story mission that consists of same-y fights, too much going from point-A to point-B, and lukewarm characters," Grayson writes.

Arthur Gies of Polygon shares the same sentiments and feels the lack in innovation.

"Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel doesn't feel like a game that needs to be, exactly. It's a story filling in gaps, adding a bit of nuance to a world that's already had two games worth of exposition rather than exploring new ground. It's the same recipe that's driven two full, long games and a host of downloadable content," Gies commented.

IGN's Vince Ingenito was able to point out a number of positive elements of the game.

"The new gear and low-gravity mechanics mixed with the zany skill trees makes for a fresh experience, and with Jack at the center driving the story forward, you get a deeper dive into the always entertaining, if well-traveled universe of Borderlands," Ingenito writes in his review.

The worldwide commercial release date of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is scheduled for Oct. 17.
