'Big Hero 6' trailer, cast: New Disney movie unveils inflatable hero inspired by real robot
In the 2-minute trailer of Disney's movie 'Big Hero 6,' the lead soft, inflatable robot named Baymax (Scott Adsit on the cast) is seen with a kid named Hiro Haramata (Ryan Potter) who he is protecting.
Built to be a robot for sick children who heals and gives hugs to the sick, Baymax is a nurse bot who gradually gets more funny and silly when he's low on battery.
According to director Don Hall, he and the makers of Big Hero 6 were inspired by a real robot arm while they were having a research tour where they visited Ivy League institutions such as Harvard, MIT and Carnegie Mellon.
"[We] saw a crude robot arm made of vinyl, and it was inflatable. There was enough there for me to extrapolate a character there," Hall said to USA Today after attending the New York Comic Con panel.
Hall added that the "animation-friendly" arm was the inspiration behind creating Baymax and his persona as a nurse bot.
Co-director Chris Williams also revealed that Big Hero 6 is "grounded on science."
In the trailer, Hiro is seen in a police station reporting an attack by a man with a kabuki mask who uses telekinesis to harm him.
Williams said that telekinesis had new developments while Big Hero was in production, particularly a person being hooked to a computer that made another individual move his fingers involuntarily.
"Science is moving fast, so you have to work hard to stay ahead of it, if you're making a movie that uses some of this more fanciful scientific stuff," Williams said.
