'Avatar 2' release date, plot news, updates: 'Avatar' sequel finally coming in late 2018

(Facebook/Avatar)"Avatar 2" will finally be released on Dec. 21, 2018.

After several delays, 20th Century Fox will finally be screening the fantasy/action film sequel "Avatar 2" in theaters in late 2018. The company also scheduled the release of "Avatar 3" in 2020, "Avatar 4" in 2022, and "Avatar 5" in 2023.

Director James Cameron, however, has been generally non-committal on when the long-awaited sequel of the top-grossing film of all time will finally be released. "Avatar" is higher by $600 million in terms of box-office gross earnings over the second top-grosser "Titanic," which was also directed by Cameron.

"The important thing for me is not when the first one comes out but the cadence of the release pattern," he said in a late 2016 interview with Variety, adding "I want them to be released as close together as possible. If it's an annual appointment to show up at Christmas, I want to make sure that we're able to fulfill on that promise."

In a late 2016 interview with ComingSoon.net, actress Sigourney Weaver said that Cameron is still developing the technology for the sequels and they will be filming them simultaneously.

Meanwhile, Cameron hinted that the plot of "Avatar 2" will be focused on "familial and imprisonment" themes. He also claimed that the stories of all the sequels can stand on their own.

In "Avatar 2," human-turned-Na'vi Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) is already the chieftain of Pandora and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) is the high priestess. The story, however, will focus more on their children and their adventures beyond the forests of Pandora, including into underwater and volcanic worlds.

Actress Sigourney Weaver will reprise her role as Dr. Grace Augustine, while actor Stephen Lang will play the character of Miles Quaritch.

The sequels are written by Cameron, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno. They will be produced by Cameron and Jon Landau via their production company Lightstorm Entertainment.

More news and updates on "Avatar 2" and the other sequels should arrive in the coming weeks.
