LG Display has issued a press release entitled "Next-generation of High-resolution 8K", which references an "iMac 8K" and states that Apple will be improving upon the theme of its 5K display with a new 8K display this year.

In October last year, Apple had unveiled a new iMac with a stunning 'Retina 5K Display,' measuring 27-inches and featuring a 5120x2880 panel that is currently manufactured by LG. 8K display is expected to hit the market sometime in 2016 and it is likely that Apple is testing an ultra-high resolution display for its standalone display range that has not been updated since 2011.

According to the press release, Apple has also announced that it would release the 'iMac 8K' with a super-high resolution display later this year. LG's 8K display technology, dubbed "Quad Ultra-High Definition" has a 7,680 x 4,320 pixel resolution — four times the resolution and four times the number of pixels of a 4K screen.

LG Display has stated that the 8K display would be launched in Japan and a service demonstration would be held at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in Korea. LG Display believes that the use of 8K displays will eventually become quite widespread.

In its press release, LG Display has stated, "It has become clear that Japan is planning to launch an 8K SHV test broadcast and then promptly restructure the UHD service. Apple has also announced that they will release the 'iMac 8K' with a super-high resolution display later this year. Korea is also preparing to offer an 8K service demonstration at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. LG Display displayed a new beacon of the 8K era by revealing their 98-inch 8K Color Prime Ultra HDTV at CES 2015."

Strangely, Apple has never made any announcement about releasing a Mac with an 8K display, though it could be working with LG to outfit its next-generation iMac with the company's high-resolution 8K display. But given that Microsoft has just launched its 27-inch iMac with a 5K display in October, it is unlikely to upgrade to a newer display so soon.
