Apple AirPods release date, delay news 2016: Source says wireless tech development causing shipment delays?
Several weeks after the Apple AirPods' release was officially postponed, a report says that the delay is primarily caused by some trouble in its wireless technology.
In a very recent Wall Street Journal report, the publication got a tip from a "source familiar to the development" of the AirPods suggesting that Apple is having problems in the final tech design of the wireless earphones.
The report mentioned that Apple has a different design for their AirPods compared to other existing wireless earphones and that might be giving them a bit of trouble. It was explained that the usual wireless earphones only has one chip to receive the Bluetooth signal from the mobile device and then transmits the signal to the other earpiece.
However, with the AirPods, Apple developed their own chip and will equip each wireless earpiece with it so that both parts will independently and simultaneously receive the Bluetooth signal from the iPhone 7 or other Apple mobile device.
Meanwhile, the WSJ report also suggested another possible problem with the product and that involves the AirPods' microphone. According to the co-founder of the wireless audio company Earin, Kiril Trajkovski, one more challenge that the AirPods have to go through is in receiving the user's voice while canceling the background noise at the same time.
Bluetooth expert and consultant Nick Hunn was also referenced, suggesting that the problems with the AirPods could be huge. Hunn said that the technical problems are "something that's blindsided [Apple]," adding that it "has to be something fairly major because they've missed the Christmas market with what had the potential to be a really sexy product."
In Sept. 7, Apple announced that the iPhone 7 will not sport the 3.5-millimetre headphone jack and subsequently unveiled the wireless AirPods that was supposedly made available to the market by October for $159 per pair.
However, in late October, Apple confirmed that they are delaying the release of the AirPods. Apple spokeswoman Trudy Miller said, "We don't believe in shipping a product before it's ready, and we need a little more time before AirPods are ready for our customers."
Apple has yet to announce the new release date for the AirPods. However, it has been reported that AirPods' production will begin this month but in a relatively low quantity of 10 to 15 million units.
