Washington Wizards trade rumors 2016: Team to add point guard Trey Burke
The Washington Wizards will soon add depth to their backcourt as it is reported that point guard Trey Burke is heading to the capital via a trade deal after a three-season run with the Utah Jazz.
In exchange, the Jazz are going to get Washington's second-rounder in the 2021 National Basketball Association (NBA) draft. Changes can still happen with the deal not yet official. It is on July 7 when the leaguewide moratorium is lifted.
Burke was the ninth overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft. In three seasons with the Jazz, the 23-year-old performed well despite having the backup role in the past two seasons. In the recently concluded 2015-16 season, he saw action in 64 games, recording career-lows 10.6 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per contest.
Despite the decline in production, Burke's numbers can still be considered good ones especially coming from a second stringer who plays 21.3 minutes per game. This means he provided quality minutes for the Jazz who almost made it to the playoffs during the previous season.
If Burke successfully joins the Wizards, he is likely having the same role. But this time, he will be the backup of an All-Star playmaker in John Wall.
Burke's impending arrival to Washington is perhaps the team's answer to the departure of veteran point guard Ramon Sessions. Wall had Sessions as his backup last season but the latter agreed to a deal with the Charlotte Hornets, a franchise he already played for.
Once the trade becomes official, this will be one of the major moves the Wizards accomplished this off-season. So far, they have not added any significant names yet this free agency and was one of the teams that failed to acquire Kevin Durant.
Last season, the Wizards did not make it past the regular season, finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference with a 41-41 record.
