'Vikings' season 4 spoilers: Ragnar captured by his enemies; show creator teases that Ivar the Boneless' grave has been found
History regaled "Vikings" fans when it released a trailer for the second half of season 4. The short clip not only teases fans with what promises to be an epic battle between the Vikings and the English, it also shows Ragnar captured by his enemies.
The first half of "Vikings" season 4 ended with Rollo (Clive Standen) soundly defeating his Viking breathren with the help of the French army. It was later revealed that Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) disappeared after the battle and returned after a few years to a changed Kattegat and four grown sons.
It comes as no surprise that King Ragnar would not be welcomed by his people nor his sons, and the trailer hinted as much. The first 20 seconds of the clip shows Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), Ragnar's sons, and King Ecbert (Linus Roache) and teases that a storm is on its way.
Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig) is then shown talking to the Seer who tells him that his father's return will bring "calamity, chaos, tragedy, and death" as viewers see glimpses of Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) bleeding on the floor, a storm hitting the Viking fleet, and men drowning. But Ragnar's oldest son tells the Seer he's not afraid of what's coming.
Like his father before him, Bjorn is determined to make his mark and is seen heading to France. He faces his uncle, shows Rollo his map of the Mediterranean Sea, and asks for safe passage for his fleet. It would be interesting to see how the two family members would act around each other, especially as they're later seen on a boat together. It seems that Rollo wants to join Bjorn on his adventure and admits to Gisla (Morgane Polanski) that he can't deny the part of himself that's still a Viking.
Fans will undoubtedly want to see to long overdue face-off between Aslaug and Lagertha, as the former accuses the latter of stealing Ragnar from her. Ragnar and Lagertha are shown kissing, and later, the shield maiden is seen walking at the head of her army.
The second half of trailer shows Ragnar being captured and placed in a metal cage. The familiar scene of Ragnar promising Ivar (Alex Andersen) that the world would soon fear him is shown. And his promises appear to ring true as there are various shots of Ivar leading an army (probably against Mercia) and in battle. The clip's last few seconds show snippets of a battle between the Vikings and King Ecbert's army, with Ragnar's sons in the thick of battle.
Aside from tantalizing fans with the trailer, at the "Vikings" panel during the recent Comic-Con, the cast entertained fans with stories of how Fimmel and Ludwig pranked each other, while show creator Michael Hirst revealed how an expedition he took part in might have discovered the grave of Ivar the Boneless.
"Vikings" season 4 will return to the History Channel in the fall.
